Harvesting of Grapes

This week on the land is a busy time for us. It’s the start of our grape harvesting. Our vineyard is divided into two types…so not all the grapes are ready at the same time…

Apart from ourselves, a few family friends come to help us out. There’s something about grape harvesting that brings everyone together. The vineyard is a buzz with activity, there’s the continual chatter among the workers, the snipping noise as the clusters of grapes are picked, the hum of bees as they flock to the sweetness of the sugar, the smell of the fermenting grapes and the laughter and smiles of a great harvest, don’t worry about the aching bones…

The first part of the harvest taking about two days, is all picked by hand. The Prosecco grapes will be ready in another couple of weeks.Read on for more…

Italian Summer Food Fairs

In our Summer months, there’s always a local sagra –fair to visit. It’s a celebration of food, and family entertainment. If you visit Italy during this time of the year, it’s a great opportunity to support local groups, volunteer “cooks” with a passion for food, eat cheaply, trying traditional dishes and enjoy live entertainment. There’s fairs of food like asparagus, rice, chicken, tripe, and even larger fairs with an event like a music/singing contest,a bicycle race, a water craft boat regatta , country line dance contest and rodeo, to name a few.

We had the opportunity to visit the “Festa dea Sardea” meaning Festival of Sardines in Silea,Treviso,Italy.

Sardines at this fair are available grilled, crumbed, and traditional venice style with sweet/sour onions.

Sardines are rich in numerous nutrients that have been found to support cardiovascular health. An excellent source of Vitamin B12 and concentrated in Vitamin D, packed with protein. Sardines are best eaten fresh, and as I don’t prepare them often at home,we decided to venture out to this fair, with a grand surprise of how many people were out eating sardines…. a little bit fiddly to eat ,but if you take your time . . .enjoyable.

Enquiring how many sardines were consumed over the 9 day festival….the answer my friends…3000 kilos.Sardines on the grill…

A local cover band played Thursday night, Toys – Planet Queen. They were great, the main singer even looked like Freddie Mercury. A huge crowd had gathered and being a  busy night, I was told 240 kilos of hot potato chips were consumed. That’s a lot of potatoes.

I took some photo’s before the kitchen was opened …everyone was busy with the all important preparation time, and all were excited to start another nights serving of fresh sardines.

Considering how many people were out, organization and professionalism was at it’s highest.

We only waited 30 minutes before enjoying a mixed plate of sardines…

Truly a great atmosphere and an enjoyable evening out.Roll on Summer nights and great Summer fun, with lots more fairs to visit.

Treviso…villa’s and gardens

As I wander along the walkway outside the walls of Treviso, the beauty and serenity can hardly be captured in a click of a camera. To take in this beauty I wish you could share an hour with me, walking along the shady pathway with its huge horse-chestnut trees, its calming meandering river, and its beautiful scenery.

Just outside the wall, through the gateway of Porta Calvi, but within the circular boundary of the centre of Treviso there are many beautiful villa’s and gardens.

All with their unique architecture and facades…and gardens that are at the water’s edge.

A private but public hide away. I love the entrances to these villa’s with grand iron gateways, entangled with ivy and emblems. Statues , columns and frescoed art , symbols of  grandeur.

Treviso is truly a beautiful place and is harmonious in saying ”la bella vita” –  the beautiful life. I truly am lucky to live in a beautiful and safe place.

Two peas in a pod

In the region Veneto, we have a large number of recipes with the base ingredient of rice. One of these favourite  well-known recipes is Rice with Peas * i risi e bisi . Taking the opportunity at the fresh growers market I purchased two kilo’s of fresh peas. Having a few recipes in mind, my choice is this one.

fresh peas

I know what you’re thinking, it’s just easier to buy a can of peas, or go to the freezer, but believe me there’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh peas. Let the senses glee with the sound of the crunch of the pea pod, the wonderful rich green colour, the perfume of fresh pearl peas, the taste and the silky glossy feel. I know I always think of my grandmothers shelling peas in the kitchen, but believe me they had it right, the  fresh taste makes all the difference.

This traditional plate is known to have been served to the Duke of Venice on the patron saints day of Saint Marks. The difference with this recipe apart from other risotto recipes is that the broth is added all at once. I use superfine carnaroli rice so cooking time maybe a little longer.

Recipe: Rice with Peas * i risi e bisi

fresh peas

Ingredients: for 4 persons

Buying 2 kilo’s of fresh peas after shelling I had just over a cup of peas

1 cup of fresh peas

50 grams pancetta

1 white onion

50 grams butter

1 tablespoon parsley

1 cup of white rice

700 ml of vegetable broth

ingredients

Chop very finely the white onion and parsley with the mezzaluna. Place 30 grams of butter and a dash of olive oil in a heavy base pan, by adding the olive oil the butter won’t burn.

chopped onion & parsley

Cook until the onion is transparent, add the pancetta, cook until crunchy, add the peas, heat the vegetable stock and add a little to the pan, cover the pan with a lid and cook for 10 minutes. Never add cold water or stock to rice it stops the cooking process.

rice with peas

Add the rice, continuously stirring, add 600 ml of vegetable broth, and continue stirring. Risotto isn’t one of those dishes you can leave to do something else, stirring is important. Here cooking time may vary, the rice I used took about 20 minutes. For this recipe the risotto shouldn’t be presented too dry, but remember we’re not making soup.

At this point if you think the risotto is too dry add the remaining 100 ml of liquid. When the rice is cooked, turn off the heat, add the remaining 20 grams of butter, stir and let the risotto rest for a few minutes, if desired you can also add a spoonful of parmesan cheese.

There you have it…Risotto..Venice style …i risi e bisi…the difference is the taste of fresh peas, so next time you see them at the market have a go at making this recipe…it’s fit for a Duke.

Enjoy!

Green with Ivy

I’m surrounded by lush green vineyards in the heat of our first Spring days an unusual but pleasant image, unusual for me after many dry, sunburnt amber Summers in Australia. It’s  truly a welcomed image after the long Winter we’ve had. My life is surrounded by green.

This photo was taken this Winter, a beautiful image also of our vineyard…

Along the lush corridors around our home.  The trees are tangled with climbing evergreen ivy, even in my garden the grand old oaks trunk is covered with meandering ivy.

An interesting article I read from Better Homes and Gardens, May 2010,(Yes , I got my hands on an english version) was Easy Outdoor Containers. Anyone, even the least green thumb gardener can achieve beautiful containers of plants grown to their potential with the basic anatomy of the pot correct, good quality of top soil and potting mix, the right position for  light source and of course drainage.

Loving the easy format of  the basic design….remember these three words – THRILLER, SPILLER, FILLER.

These basic three words have been the formula I’ve used in planting beautiful pots for many years. Yes, believe me it’s a no fail design principle. The combination of an upright plant, giving the container height, that’s the thriller, the spilling over effect of a trailer, I always use ivy, I love even the variegated leaf , and the filler, the touch of colour and fullness of the flowering annuals, this year I’ve splashed the garden with crimson pink.

With this basic format you can enjoy beautiful flowering containers, even a stunning effect of placing two or three containers together. Or a stunning entrance winner….trailing evergreen ivy.

To Market…To Market

I couldn’t resist the urge this morning to get all the housework finished early and take a look around the markets in the heart of Treviso. The weather forecast was for rain but ignoring all-weather reports I decided to take the chance and head off, with walking shoes on, camera , wallet and no room for an umbrella. I must admit today I looked like a tourist and that’s how I played the game. Arriving outside the wall, I took a brisk walk into the centre of Treviso, the markets are an open-aired market and divided into three areas…fruit and vegetables, fish and everything else.

market day

Treviso’s markets are every Tuesday and Saturday, and are a real buzz. You can buy almost anything, clothes, shoes, belts and accessories. Fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, you can buy a cooked chicken to a new pet mouse or canary.

It was fun walking around with camera in hand, and I surely did stand out in the crowd. Everyone was happy to smile and let me take the shot, and I think I must had been asked more than 10 times…”where are you from?”

candy stall

It’s the perfect place to get the five senses working, seeing all the wonderful local produce, “Made in Italy”, smelling the magical perfumes, from freshly ground coffee, cheeses and salame, herbs and flowers. Tasting samples of local products, like honey and cheese. Feeling the texture of different materials and hearing the buzz of the Italian language.

It was hard to resist not taking more photo’s of these flower stalls…a brilliant rainbow of new spring colours…

These markets start at 8.00am and finish around 1.00pm, and I must admit I did lose time wandering around…

fish market

My last stop was to visit my friend who with her family have a fresh fruit and vegetable stall.
Ending today’s visit, I guess lady luck was on my side today….not a drop of rain and the wallet remained closed but a pleasant capture through the lens of market day in Treviso.

Turning your head…..Treviso

Treviso

Walking around the outside of the wall of Treviso is truly a pleasurable experience…taking my time today…I wanted to capture the full picture. Innumerable lions and coats of arms are carved into the walls, semi - circular turrets break up the outline of this wall, remnants of battlement… if only a whisper from these walls could tell me what this beautiful place today went through during war-time.

Porta of San Tomaso.Treviso

The north entrance gate to Treviso is called Porta of San Tomaso, daunting walls were erected to make the town more secure in the early sixteenth century.  Access to the town was restricted to just three gates, which have all survived intact to the present day.

The water canals flow around and through Treviso under large and small bridges and in front of reflecting houses with their colourful balconies of blooming flowers.Treviso is a maze of narrow cobbled lanes, and not easy to walk around ladies with heels.

Treviso by night is magnificient, the heart of town Piazza dei Signori is the main meeting place for both young and old. Now surrounded by bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours. It’s the place to meet for a “spritz” the local drink of prosecco and bitters.
